Carmex is probably one of the world’s most famous brands of lips balm. Today, legendary Carmex lip balms are known all over the world. They have become a must have for many consumers, and this is totally deserved because Carmex lip balms are formulated with active ingredients which make the skin of the lips soft and smooth, help to remedy cold sores, and effectively prevent dry and chapped lips.
Carmex lib balms are produced by Carma Laboratories, Inc., an American company founded by Alfred Woelbing. In 1937, Woelbing started making medicated lip balm by hand in an attempt to treat his cold sores. Originally, he made his products in the kitchen and sold them visiting pharmacies one by one. Two decades later, Woelbing opened his first production facility in Wauwatisa, Wisconsin.
Over the years, lip balms produced by Carma Laboratories, Inc. have become known and loved in many countries. The company still produces lip balms based on Woelbing’s original recipe (Carmex Classic), but also offers several new product lines to suit any taste. At the same time, the company’s philosophy has remained unchanged. Just like in the 1940s, Carmex lip balms are formulated with high-quality, yet inexpensive ingredients, which makes them as affordable as possible.
For more than seven decades, lanolin has been one of the key ingredients used in Carmex lip balms. Lanolin, also known as wool grease or wool wax, is a natural wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals, primarily domestic sheep. Lanolin is used extensively in personal care due to its pronounced moisturising and softening properties. It also helps to speed up the healing of minor skin injuries and protects the skin from dehydration and the environment.
Another traditional ingredient contained in Carmex lip balms is white petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly. Petrolatum is widely used in cosmetic skin care due to its lubricating and coating properties. By reducing moisture loss, it can prevent chapped lips. It also provides a protective layer to stop bacteria from infecting cracked lips.
Although organic cosmetic brands don’t use lanolin and petrolatum (because lanolin is an animal product and petrolatum is obtained from petroleum), these ingredients are completely safe for your health. Both are recognized by the FDA (the U.S. Food and Drug Administration), and approved for use in over-the-counter pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and personal care products.
Alongside lanolin and petrolatum, Carmex lip balms contain a mix of active ingredients (camphor, menthol, salicylic acid and phenol), vegetable oils (cocoa butter, avocado oil, cranberry seed oil), beeswax, paraffin wax, aloe vera leaf juice, colloidal oatmeal, vitamin E, and other ingredients which help to keep the lips healthy and supple.
Carma Laboratories, Inc. offers several product lines, including Classic Lip Balm Medicated (the original lip balm for dry and chapped lips), Carmex Comfort Care, Carmex Daily Care, and Carmex Cold Sore Treatment. They are available in classic jars, compact sticks and squeezable tubes, so you can choose whichever format you like.
