Hair dyeing, also known as hair colouring, dates back to ancient times. Chemical dyes were invented not so long ago, so for a major part of history, people used various herbs and other natural ingredients to dye their hair. Some of the most well known are henna, indigo, senna, amla and turmeric.

The development of synthetic hair dyes can be traced back to the 1860s, when scientists discovered the ability of p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) to oxidise to a dye. The first synthetic hair dye was created in 1907 by French pharmacist and entrepreneur Eugène Schueller, the founder of L'Oréal. Schwarzkopf launched its first hair dye 40 years later.

Although synthetic hair dyes have many benefits, there are some drawbacks, too. Permanent hair dyes are generally formulated with ammonia, a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen. Ammonia opens the cuticle layer of the hair, facilitating the penetration of the developer (oxidising agent) and colourant into the hair cortex.

Ammonia is both caustic and hazardous in its concentrated form. Although synthetic dyes contain low concentrations of ammonia that are deemed safe, the use of ammonia-based hair dyes in people with sensitive scalp can result in skin irritation and/or allergic reactions. Symptoms can include skin redness, discomfort, itching, and burning sensation. Excessive use of synthetic hair dyes can also result in dry and fragile hair that breaks off easily. To prevent hair breakage, people who frequently dye their hair have to use lots of moisturising products.

No wonder that a lot of consumers choose to colour their hair with ammonia-free hair dyes. Such dyes can be all-natural, synthetic, or based on a combination of natural and synthetic ingredients (for example, henna and PPD). High-quality ammonia-free hair dyes provide permanent colouring without the side effects caused by ammonia. Besides, they are often enriched with medicinal herbs and/or oils that help to keep the hair hydrated and prevent breakage.

Indian brand Nisha, owned and produced by Prem Henna, offers a wide range of ammonia-free hair dyes that ensure a deep and rich colour, as well as 100% grey hair coverage. All dyes are formulated with henna powder (sometimes combined with synthetic colourants) and enriched with natural ingredients that help to strengthen the hair and improve its elasticity and flexibility, such as avocado oil and sunflower seed oil.
