Hibiscus, also known as roselle or Sudan rose, is an herb native to West Africa but cultivated in many tropical regions of the world. Its petals are used to make hibiscus tea known as agua de Jamaica in the Americas and carcadè in Africa and Europe. The petals and sepals of hibiscus are a source of vitamins (A, B, C) and dietary minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium).
Hibiscus petal powder is a great skincare product suitable for all skin types. It makes the skin softer and smoother, produces a rejuvenating and revitalising effect, makes the skin firmer and boosts microcirculation in the epidermis. In addition, this powder nourishes the skin, effectively combats acne breakouts, speeds up the healing of minor skin injuries, reduces the appearance of pores, has a deep cleansing effect and normalises sebum secretion.
As a hair care product, hibiscus powder is used to reduce hair loss and prevent splits ends. It strengthens hair structure along the entire length, combats dandruff, produces a conditioning effect, makes the hair more manageable and gives it a healthy shine.
Directions.
To make a skin/hair mask, mix 1 tsp hibiscus powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and/or moisturiser, if necessary.
To make a decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make an infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp hibiscus powder, leave overnight. Strain before use. The infusion can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
You can use hibiscus decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse. Hibiscus powder can be mixed with other Ayurvedic powders for a better effect.
Check for skin sensitivity before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water.
