Peel-off masks have become one of the biggest skincare trends lately, and for a good reason: not only are they effective, they also provide a weirdly satisfying feeling when you peel them off your skin. There are many varieties of peel-off masks, including algae (alginate) masks. They have numerous skin benefits, but they can also be tricky to apply. Let’s figure out how to use algae peel-off masks for the maximum benefit.
Alginate face masks are called so because they’re formulated with alginic acid or its salt, sodium alginate. This ingredient is sourced from brown algae. Alginic acid is a polysaccharide with high absorbent properties. It absorbs water quickly and turns into a viscous gel, making it a perfect base for peel-off masks. Unfortunately, it also plasticises quickly, so you should be very careful when applying an alginate mask. How to apply a peel-off mask with alginic acid properly?
Step 1. Cleanse Your Face
Cleansing is an important first step before applying any kind of facial mask because dirt, grime, makeup residue and excess skin oil will prevent active ingredients from penetrating into your skin. However, you shouldn’t overcleanse your face because it may cause irritation and redness. The best way to prepare your face for an alginate mask is to wash it with a sulphate-free foaming cleanser or an Ayurvedic ubtan.

Step 2. Prepare the Mask According to the Directions on the Packaging
Unlike peel-off masks with polyvinyl alcohol that come in tubes, alginate masks are sold in the form of a powder that needs to be mixed with water right before use. It is important that you take the right amount of powder and cool or lukewarm water (using hot water may cause lumps) and mix them together really well and really quickly, before the mask begins to plasticise.

Step 3. Apply the Mask all Over Your Face
First of all, you should protect your hairline and eyebrows with Vaseline, carrier oil or a thick cream to keep them from getting glued to the mask. When you’re ready, lie down and apply the mask in a thick layer all over your face. Remember that you should do this quickly before the mixture plasticises. If you’re not sure you’re up to the task, ask someone to help you.

Step 4. Wait for Half an Hour, Then Peel the Mask Off
The mask should stay on your face for 30–40 minutes. When the time is up, lift the edge of the mask closest to your chin and peel the mask off in one piece. Then use a cotton pad soaked in toner to remove any residue and apply moisturiser. You should notice the result after the first use: alginate masks are supposed to make your skin look fresh and well-rested.
