Body odour is one of the most unpleasant cosmetic and medical problems that we have to face. It is sometimes referred to as “the smell of sweat”, but in fact fresh sweat is absolutely odourless. The main cause of body odour is bacterial activity in the areas that sweat the most, such as the armpits, feet, and groin. To eliminate body odour, personal care brands offer an impressive selection of deodorants and antiperspirants. Unfortunately, many of them pose certain health concerns, so more and more consumers are choosing natural deodorants.

Before learning more about natural deodorants, let’s figure out the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. Deodorants are formulated with antibacterial agents that kill odour-causing bacteria, while antiperspirants also contain ingredients that affect sweat glands and, as a result, stop or significantly reduce perspiration.

Despite their obvious effectiveness, you shouldn’t use antiperspirants all the time if you really care about your health. First, lack of perspiration affects your body’s natural thermoregulation mechanisms. In other words, sweat helps your body to cool down, and if you don’t sweat, you can have a heat stroke. Second, most antiperspirants contain aluminium salts (aluminium chloride, aluminium chlorohydrate, aluminium-zirconium) that can irritate the skin, cause the inflammation of the sweat glands, and accumulate in your body, leading to various health problems.

Unfortunately, some of the regular deodorants that don’t stop sweating aren’t 100% safe either. Cheap mass-market deodorants often contain ingredients that can cause skin irritation and other problems. For example, ethanol dries the skin, triclosan can induce antimicrobial resistance in odour-causing bacteria, parabens are often included in the lists of the most harmful cosmetic ingredients, etc.

Luckily, there are natural deodorants that effectively combat body odour and at the same time are completely safe for the health. They are formulated with antibacterial agents whose effectiveness and safety are confirmed not only by laboratory tests, but also by the experience of several generations of consumers. These agents include alums (natural aluminium salts, which, unlike aluminium chloride or aluminium chlorohydrate, are considered safe), zinc oxide (a multifunctional mineral component with a deodorising, adsorbent, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antiseptic effect), essential oils, etc.

The most “minimalistic” natural deodorants consist only of alums, most commonly potassium alum or ammonium alum. Such products are known as mineral deodorants or salt deodorants. But they are not the only variety of natural deodorants. For example, deodorant creams are a very easy-to-use option. They contain carrier oils that moisturise and soften the skin, natural sorbents (for example, starch) that absorb sweat, safe antibacterial agents (salicylic acid, zinc oxide, methenamine), and other natural ingredients.

One of the best things about natural deodorant creams it that you can apply them to different areas of the body, for example, the armpits, feet, and groin. They absorb very quickly, don’t leave your skin feeling sticky, and don’t stain clothing. Deodorant creams are usually packaged in compact tubes or jars that you can carry with you at all times; you can use them at the gym and swimming pool, in business trips and on vacations.

Our online shop Organic Store offers a great selection of natural deodorants at reasonable prices, including mineral deodorants (crystals, sticks, sprays, roll-on deodorants) and deodorant creams produced by trustworthy brands.
