A lot of women (and men as well) dye their hair because they are not satisfied with its natural colour or want to cover grey hair. People began to dye their hair in ancient times, using natural dyes obtained from plants. In 1907, Eugène Schueller, the founder of L'Oréal, created the first synthetic dye. Since then, the hair dyeing industry has been rapidly developing. Synthetic dyes allow to change your hair colour to almost any colour imaginable. Sadly, even the best synthetic dyes are not perfect, they can cause allergy and damage hair structure. That is why many women still prefer herbal hair dyes that are both safe and effective.

As it has already been mentioned, ancient hair dyes were obtained from plants. Some of the most popular were henna (Lawsonia inermis), indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), senna (Senna italica), turmeric (Curcuma longa) and amla (Phyllanthis emblica). Depending on the type of plant, its juice, dried leaves or flowers were used. Henna and indigo (also known as tarum, nila and basma) are probably the best known and most widely used. Henna- and indigo-based natural hair dyes allow to achieve a wide range of hair colours depending on the proportions of the main and additional ingredients as well as the natural hair colour.

Natural herbal hair dyes based on henna and ingido do not damage hair structure. A lot of mass market synthetic hair dyes are made with ingredients which “wash out” the natural hair pigment and replace it with synthetic pigment, while the active substances contained in herbal dyes do not affect the natural pigment or hair structure. They carefully envelop each hair, providing a stable adhesion of pigments to the surface of the hair cuticle.

It should be noted that herbal hair dyes like henna and indigo do not just help to change hair colour or cover grey hair. They also condition the hair, improve its elasticity and make it look healthy and beautiful. For example, henna has a wide range of useful properties. It has a rejuvenating and revitalising effect on the hair and scalp, strengthens hair roots, stimulates hair growth and prevents hair loss. Besides, henna has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and thus prevents dandruff.
