How to Choose the Right Eyebrow Tint

How to Choose the Right Eyebrow Tint Eyebrow tinting is a very popular service provided by beauty parlours and individual beauticians. If your eyebrows aren’t naturally flawless, but you don’t want to spend too much time on eyebrow grooming and makeup, eyebrow tinting is definitely something you should look into. However, it is very important to choose the right eyebrow tint so that your eyebrows look natural and your skin doesn’t get irritated.

Eyebrow grooming isn’t something new. In some countries, women have tinted their eyebrows with henna and other herbal dyes for centuries, and eyebrow plucking was a thing in Ancient Egypt. Eyebrow trends have changed many times throughout the recent history, but today’s main trend seems to be “the more natural, the better”. However, “natural” in this case means “well-groomed while looking like you’ve put no effort at all”. A good eyebrow artist can make your eyebrows look like that, but what if you can’t afford their services or don’t have time to make an appointment?

Tinting your eyebrows at home can be a viable alternative to an appointment with an eyebrow artist. At home, you can tint your eyebrows anytime you want using any eyebrow tint. However, it is very important to choose the right tint if you want your eyebrows to look natural and don’t want to deal with skin irritation or even chemical burns.

There are two main types of eyebrow tint: natural tints and permanent (chemical) tints. The former are formulated with henna and other plant-based hair dyes, whereas the latter are formulated with chemical pigments and oxidisers. Both types of tint come in a wide range of hues, from light brown to deep black.

Although eyebrow tints are very similar to hair dyes, you should by no means use regular hair dye to tint eyebrows. The thing is, chemical hair dyes are typically safe for the scalp, unless you have overly sensitive skin, but they can irritate the delicate skin around the eyes and cause redness, itching, irritation or even chemical burns if you apply them to your eyebrows. So if you opt for a chemical dye, it should be specifically designed for eyebrow tinting.

How to choose the right eyebrow tint colour? The answer to this question depends on several individual factors, but the basic rule of choosing the right colour for your eyebrows says that your eyebrows should be one or two shades darker than your hair if you have light hair, and one or two shades lighter than your hair if you have dark hair. This way, your eyebrows will look most natural.

For example, if you have blonde hair, you should opt for light brown eyebrow tint to enhance your eye colour and highlight your facial features. Brown eyebrows are a safe choice for redheads and brown-haired women (and men – anyone can tint their eyebrows if they want to!). Black eyebrows only look good on black-haired individuals, and they should be slightly lighter than the hair.

The available palette of eyebrow tint shades depends on the tint type: permanent eyebrow tints have the widest colour range, including even colours that don’t occur naturally, whereas henna-based eyebrow tints allow to achieve only natural colours. However, this is not much of a drawback, since a natural look is the latest trend in eyebrow grooming.

As a rule, permanent eyebrow tints last for a relatively long time, on average for 4 to 6 weeks. Plant-based hair dyes begin to fade a little faster, in about 2 weeks or so. Nevertheless, henna-based eyebrow tints are very popular because they are very easy to use at home, and also because they are less likely to cause skin irritation than chemical eyebrow tints.
