How to Properly Cleanse Your Face in the Summer

How to Properly Cleanse Your Face in the Summer In summer, facial skin usually gets grimier than during the rest of the year, and therefore requires more thorough cleansing. If you fail to cleanse your face properly, it may result in blackheads and acne breakouts, shiny or flaky skin, a dull complexion, and other skin imperfections. To keep your skin healthy and glowing during the hot months, you need to know how to properly cleanse your face in the summer.

During the summer season, your skin is particularly vulnerable to various environmental factors, such as UV radiation, heat, and dust. So it is not surprising that you want to wash your face more frequently than usual to make your skin feel clean and fresh again. However, frequent washing may do more harm than good.

No matter how much you want to use harsh scrubs and clay masks as often as possible to prevent shiny skin and keep your pores clean, you should not use such products every day. Stripping your skin of natural oils will only make it produce even more sebum in order to compensate, leading to clogged pores, blackheads, pimples, and a dull, greasy complexion.

Therefore, the main rule of cleansing your facial skin in the summer is to steer clear of aggressive products. You should opt for mild, gentle cleansers that suit your skin type and do not contain harsh surfactants. At the same time, they must be effective in order to deeply cleanse the pores.

There is no need to wash your face more frequently than usual in the summer. Twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, will suffice. The night-time cleansing should be especially thorough, but it doesn’t mean that you need to wash your face until it feels squeaky clean. As we’ve already mentioned above, completely stripping your skin of its natural oils only leads to it producing more oil. Besides, without its protective hydro-lipid barrier, your skin is defenceless against various environmental factors.

On particularly hot days, your skin may need additional cleansing, but you don’t need to use your face wash for this. To make your skin feel clean and fresh, simply spray some thermal or micellar water on your face and blot it with a soft paper tissue.

Make-up remover wipes are another quick cleansing solution. They will come in handy, for example, if you need to cleanse your face before re-applying sunscreen. However, you should keep in mind that make-up remover wipes are no substitute for a thorough cleansing, so you should use your regular makeup remover to get rid of makeup and impurities at the end of the day.

It is very important to choose the right face wash. For example, if you apply sunscreen during the day (and you really, really should!) and wear makeup, you need a cleanser that will wash it all off without you having to rub your face vigorously. On the other hand, it shouldn’t contain harsh surfactants, such as sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate (SLS/SLES). Try a cleanser with a creamy or oily texture, for example, the famous hydrophilic oil. However, such cleansers may not be the best choice if you have oily skin.

If you have dry skin, you can skip face wash in the morning. Instead, cleanse the skin with micellar water and follow up with a refreshing toner. However, if you have oily or combination skin, using some kind of face wash (gel, mousse, foam, etc.) in the morning and in the evening is an absolute must.

Regardless of your skin type, your facial cleansing products must contain no alcohol because it dehydrates the skin, which results in increased sebum production. Make sure that the water you wash your face with is neither too hot nor to cold; it is preferable to wash your face with soft water, but we realise that there is little you can do about the hardness of the running water.

Please, keep in mind that it is advisable not to use acid peels or other skincare products with AHAs/BHAs during the summer months because organic acids increase the skin’s sensitivity to UV radiation, which may lead to pigmentation, uneven skin tone, and even sunburn. If you absolutely cannot do without acid-containing products, consult your beautician to choose the safest ones.

As you can see, a summertime facial cleansing routine has its own rules, following which, you can achieve excellent results without stripping your skin of moisture and causing irritation.
