Ambra soap has been produced by the Lviv Private Soap Factory, a family-owned company based in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, since 2010. It is a small enterprise where handmade cosmetic products are produced in small batches to ensure high quality. For example, Ambra soap is made using the cold soap making process which makes it different from mass-market counterparts.

The cold process is one of the oldest soap making techniques. It involves vegetable oils (olive oil, shea butter, coconut oil, etc.) and lye. The lye is dissolved in water and combined with the oils (which have to be melted first if they are solid at room temperature). The mixture is mixed well until thickened and emulsified, poured into moulds, and left to continue saponification. In 12 to 48 hours, the soap is removed from moulds, cut into bars and left to cure for several weeks or even months.

Cold process soap making doesn’t require heating the ingredients. Solid vegetable oils are heated to melting point to liquefy them, which is usually about body temperature (30-40° С), but that’s it. As a result, useful substances contained in oils from unsaponified fractions retain all their properties which makes cold process soap a better skincare product than hot process soap.

Due to not being exposed to high temperatures, cold process soap has a more delicate texture than hot process soap. However, its saponification takes more time. Cold process soap is safe to use after the insulation period which lasts 12 to 48 hours, but most manufacturers leave cold process soaps to cure and harden for several weeks before use. This process helps to get rid of excess water and trace amounts of residual lye.

All soaps produced by the Lviv Private Soap Factory are made using cold process soap making and cured for at least 6 weeks (and some soaps like traditional Castile soap are cured for 6 months). This allows to achieve perfect balance between the saponified fraction and unsaponifiables designed to take care of the skin. Various natural additives such as essential oils, herbal extracts, dried herbs, honey, oatmeal, etc. are added to Ambra soaps to enhance their effect and to give them a light, natural scent.
