Oily skin needs special care because, due to overactive sebaceous glands, it is easily susceptible to clogged pores, blackheads, shininess, blemishes, pimples, and build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Besides, oily skin needs hydration and nourishment, just like any other skin type. Many women who have oily skin use homemade face masks to keep their skin looking healthy and flawless.
People turn to DIY skincare for many reasons. Sometimes they just want to save money on expensive over-the-counter cosmetics, other times it’s because they believe that natural ingredients are safer than their synthetic counterparts. Be that as it may, homemade facial masks have several benefits: you save money, you have complete control over ingredients, and your skincare products are specifically customized for your skin.
We realize that making DIY cosmetics takes time and that you are probably not ready to replace some of your favourite over-the-counter skincare products with homemade analogues. But you can still give it a try and include DIY face masks in your skincare routine as an addition.
First of all, let’s figure out what oily skin needs. Oily skin is caused by increased sebum secretion, which causes shininess, clogged pores, blackheads and acne. It can be rough in texture and tends to have enlarged pores. That’s why face masks for oily skin must have a cleansing, moisturising, nourishing, and matte effect. They also need to tighten pores and prevent inflammation. Here are some recipes for you to try.
This mask helps to reduce sebum secretion and prevent oily shine, tightens pores, improves complexion, and exfoliates dead skin cells. To make it, you’ll need an egg white and 1 tsp lemon juice. Whip the egg white with the juice, apply the mixture to your face and leave for 10–15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and moisturise.
The following DIY mask for oily skin is designed to whiten the skin and unclog pores. It consists of 1 tsp parsley juice, 1 tsp lemon juice, 2 drops of tea tree oil, and some neem powder. Mix the ingredients and stir well to obtain thick, lump-free paste. Apply to your face and massage lightly for 1 minute, then leave the mask for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Lemon juice and parsley juice will produce a whitening effect, while neem powder will unclog pores and remove dirt, grime, excess sebum and dead cells from the surface of the skin.
Kaolin, also known as white clay, is one of the most popular ingredients in homemade masks for oily skin due to its pronounced antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to normalise sebum secretion, tightens pores, and makes the skin smoother. To try a DIY face mask with white clay, take 1 tsp kaolin, 2 or 3 drops of bergamot oil, 4 drops of grapeseed oil and 1 egg yolk. Mix all ingredients, apply to your skin and wait until the mask dries, then rinse. This mask unclogs pores, provides the skin with nutrients, helps to keep it hydrated, and produces an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect.
To prevent inflammation and enlarged pores, mix 1 tsp black clay with 3 drops of tea tree essential oil and some water to get a thick paste. Apply to clean skin and wait until the mask dries. Black clay will cleanse pores, relieve inflammation and provide the skin with silicone, iron and calcium. Tea tree oil has a strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect.
Oily skin is less prone to wrinkling or other signs of ageing, because the oil keeps the moisture locked into the epidermis. Nevertheless, mature skin needs special care. Here is a DIY mask for mature oily skin. Mix 1 tsp multani mitti clay (fullers’ earth) with vitamins A and E, 1 tsp aloe vera leaf juice and 1 tsp honey. Apply to your face for 15–20 minutes, rinse thoroughly. This mask helps to smooth out fine lines, improves complexion, and produces a slight lifting effect.
