Dandruff is a common skin condition that affects about half of adults, with men being affected more often than women. Contrary to a common misconception, dandruff isn’t caused by poor hygiene. Most commonly, it is caused by a yeast-like fungus, so most dandruff treatments are formulated with anti-fungal ingredients, including selenium disulphide, ketoconazole, ciclopirox olamine and zinc pyrithione.
The signs and symptoms of dandruff include itchy and flaky scalp. Other symptoms include a tingly feeling on the skin and red and greasy patches of skin. Dandruff can have several causes, including seborrhoeic dermatitis (inflammation of the scalp), shampooing too often, dry skin, increased sensitivity to hair care products, and some skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. But fungus is the most common cause of dandruff.
There are several kinds of dandruff-causing fungi. One of them is Pityrosporum ovale, also known as Malassezia furfur. It occurs naturally on the surface of the skin and causes seborrhoeic dermatitis. Selenium disulphide is commonly used to treat dandruff associated with this fungus. Selenium disulphide is an antifungal agent that has been used to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis and some other skin conditions since the 1950s. It is on the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines.
Anti-dandruff products with selenium disulphide include shampoo and antifungal cream (paste). In the United States, a 1% strength selenium disulphide treatment is available as an over-the-counter medicine, but to purchase a 2.5% strength treatment, you’ll need a prescription. In other countries, however, regulations may be different.
Ukrainian brand Sulsena presents a line of anti-dandruff hair care products with selenium disulphide, including shampoo, paste, hair oil, and hair cream. Its products have become quite popular in Ukraine and neighbouring countries due to their effectiveness, high quality and affordability. Let us take a closer look at anti-dandruff paste produced by Sulsena.
The brand offers two kinds of anti-dandruff paste with different concentrations of selenium disulphide. 1% paste is a prophylactic product designed to prevent dandruff, while 2% paste can be used for both treatment and prevention.
Sulsena Anti-dandruff Treatment & Prophylactic Paste 2% is formulated with a double amount of selenium disulphide (compared to the brand’s 1% paste). It effectively inhibits the growth of Pityrosporum ovale, eliminating the main cause of dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Regular use of the paste also helps to reduce sebum secretion and relieves itchy scalp.
Anti-dandruff Treatment & Prophylactic Paste 1% by Sulsena is primarily designed to prevent dandruff but it can also be used to treat “light” cases of dandruff or at the final stages of treatment. Sulsena’s 1% paste prevents the recurrence of dandruff and associated symptoms, such as itching, flaking, dry skin, and increases sebum secretion.
Both pastes are enriched with ingredients that complement and enhance the effect of the antifungal agent. Active ingredients contained in the product nourish and strengthen hair follicles, stimulate hair growth, and make the hair look healthier.
Sulsena anti-dandruff pastes are approved by the Bogomolets National Medical University in Kyiv, Ukraine. They have no known side effects and can be used without particular restrictions, except for hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
Anti-dandruff paste is easy to use. First and foremost, you need to wash your hair. For a more pronounced effect, use Sulsena anti-dandruff shampoo. Then apply some paste at the hair roots and rub it in your scalp with circular motions. Leave the product for 10–15 minutes, rinse thoroughly. When using the paste, avoid contact with eyes and damaged skin.
