Use and Benefits of Chamomile Oil

Use and Benefits of Chamomile Oil Chamomile has been used in traditional medicine for centuries thanks to it soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile infusion is a common treatment for a sore stomach, insomnia, and some other conditions, and chamomile oil is widely used in aromatherapy and skincare. Let’s learn more about the use and benefits of chamomile oil.

The species of chamomile that is most widely used in medicine is Matricaria chamomilla (Chamomilla recutita), commonly known as German chamomile, Italian chamomile or simply chamomile. It is native to Europe and temperate Asia, and has been widely introduced in parts of North America, South America and Australia.

Dried chamomile is widely used to make herb infusions with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile tea is used to relieve a sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, as a gentle sleep aid, and as a mild laxative. It can also be used externally as an anti-inflammatory and bactericidal agent in the treatment of minor skin injuries and some skin conditions.

Chamomile is used to produce two types of oil. Chamomile essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the chamomile flowers. One of its active ingredients is bisabolol, a natural alcohol with anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and skin healing properties. Other active ingredients include chamazulene, farnesene, flavonoids and coumarin.

Like most essential oils, chamomile oil may irritate the skin when applied undiluted. That’s why it is rarely used for skincare purposes. If you want to use chamomile oil to take care of your skin and hair, try chamomile base oil instead. It is made by soaking dried chamomile flowers in a carrier oil such as almond oil, olive oil, etc. Such chamomile oil can be applied to skin undiluted and combines the useful properties of chamomile and the carrier oil it is based on.

Chamomile oil has pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, healing, regenerative, and soothing properties, which makes it perfect for taking care of problem skin. Chamomile oil kills the bacteria that cause inflammation and acne, as well as keeps the skin hydrated without clogging pores or causing a greasy and shiny appearance. All you need to keep your skin clean, smooth and glowing is apply a couple of drops to clean, damp skin and massage lightly until the oil absorbs. Do this twice a day as part of your regular skincare routine, and you’ll notice the result very soon.

Chamomile oil has both moisturising and soothing properties, so it is great for dry and sensitive skin. When applied regularly, it prevents dehydrated and flaky skin, keeps the skin from feeling tight, and improves complexion. Daily skincare with chamomile oil will keep your skin looking healthy and glowing.

Chamomile oil can be also used for hair care. Its active ingredients strengthen hair roots and stimulate hair growth, so you can use chamomile oil to reduce hair loss. It is more effective when blended with burdock oil, which is known for its hair strengthening properties.

You should keep in mind that chamomile has a lightening effect on the hair. Dark hair won’t lighten much but brunettes might notice a subtle brightening of their natural highlights. Blondes may see their hair lighten about half a shade and become shinier if they apply chamomile oil regularly.

You can apply chamomile oil to the entire length of your hair, to hair roots, or to hair ends depending on your hair type and the results you want to achieve. Leave the oil on for 30 minutes to 20 hours, then shampoo and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. If you have very dry and damaged hair, you can put on a shower cap and leave the treatment on for the night. You also can add chamomile oil to store-bought hair care products (masks, conditioners) and DIY hair masks.
