The term miswak originally refers to the twigs of the arak tree (also known as jhak, pilu, mustard tree or toothbrush tree), which have been used for millennia as a natural toothbrush in the Arabian Peninsula, parts of Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, and some other regions. However, it is also sometimes used to refer to the tree itself.
Miswak powder, just like miswak twigs, is used for oral hygiene as a natural dentifrice. It helps to combat gum inflammation, cleanses and polishes tooth enamel, and contributes to tooth decay prevention. Miswak powder also prevents bad breath and inhibits the growth of pathogenic microbes in the oral cavity.
Miswak powder is also widely used as a skincare product because of its anti-inflammatory, cleansing and refreshing properties. It helps to normalise the production of sebum (skin oil), combats blackheads and pimples, evens out skin tone and improves complexion, reduces pigmentation. In addition, miswak boosts skin elasticity, makes the skin softer and smoother, stimulates skin cell regeneration, and acts as a disinfectant.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a miswak decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a miswak infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp miswak powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use miswak decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Miswak powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
