Jojoba oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a shrub native to the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is liquid at room temperature; unrefined jojoba oil has a golden colour and a slightly nutty odour, while refined oil is colourless and odourless.
Jojoba oil is valued due to its unique chemical composition. Although it is referred to as oil, it is in fact a liquid wax composed of wax esters (mono-esters of long-chain fatty acids and alcohols), whereas most vegetable oils are composed of triglyceride esters. Because of this, jojoba oil is extraordinary resistant to high temperatures and has a long shelf life.
Jojoba oil is primarily composed of liquid wax esters of gondoic (11-Eicosenoic) acid, eruric acid, and oleic acid, with smaller amounts of behenic, lignoceric, nervonic, palmitic, palmitoleic, and stearic acid wax esters.
