Neutral Henna Powder for Strong and Healthy Hair Neutral henna is a popular hair treatment that is widely used by women in India and some other countries. Unlike regular henna, it doesn’t change the colour of hair, but instead simply makes it thicker and glossier.

Henna is a natural hair dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia inermis (the henna tree). It is widely used as a cosmetic hair dye that allows to achieve a wide range of shades, from orange to auburn to burgundy (and an even wider range when mixed with other natural hair dyes such as indigo).

Despite its name, neutral henna has nothing to do with henna dye. Neutral henna powder is prepared from the dry leaves of the plant Senna italica (Cassia obovata), commonly known as Italian senna or Senegal senna. In India, it is widely used as a hair treatment that coats the hair, making it look thick and glossy.

Neutral henna is rich in biologically active substances such as chrysophanol, emodin, carotene, betaine, rutin, and others. Chrysophanol (chrysophanic acid) has a pronounced antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. It helps to eliminate dandruff. Emodine helps to restore the hair’s neutral shine, carotene repairs damaged hair structure, betaine locks in moisture and makes the hair softer and smoother, and rutin strengthens hair roots.

Neutral henna powder is a great hair care product and ingredient for DIY hair masks. Some women use it as a hair lamination treatment because neutral henna makes the hair smoother and glossier. Besides, this product helps to restore the hair’s natural shine and strength, prevents brittle hair and split ends, eliminates dandruff, normalises the hydro-lipid balance and sebum secretion in the scalp, strengthens hair roots, and stimulates hair growth.

As we’ve already mentioned above, neutral henna powder is most often used as an ingredient in DIY treatments. For example, to make a neutral henna hair conditioner, you need to mix 2 tbsp henna powder with 2 cups of hot water or herbal infusion (chamomile, nettle, peppermint, etc.). Stir well and leave for 40 minutes, then sift and use the liquid to rinse your hair after washing it. This conditioner will make your hair stronger, shinier and more manageable.

You can also use neutral henna to prepare hair masks. Here are several hair treatment recipes with henna powder for you to try. Some of them have an overall strengthening effect and are suitable for all hair types, while others are designed to solve specific hair problems.

Classic Hair Mask

This is a very simple recipe that requires only two ingredients: neutral henna powder and hot water. Mix them to obtain a moderately thick paste (you’ll have to figure out the proportions yourself, it comes with practice) and leave it to set for 15 minutes. Apply the mask to damp hair and leave for 30 minutes to 2 hours, then rinse with plenty of warm water.

Strengthening Hair Mask

To prepare this mask, mix 1 part neutral henna powder and 1 part mustard powder, then add hot water and stir well to obtain a moderately thick paste. Leave the mask to set for 15 minutes, apply to your hair and leave for 30–40 minutes. Rinse with warm water. This mask strengthens hair roots and stimulates microcirculation in the scalp.

Mask for Oily Hair

Mix 2 tbsp neutral henna, 2 tbsp kaolin (white clay), 1 tbsp burdock oil and several drops of lemon juice in a non-metallic bowl. Add some hot water, stir well and leave the mixture to set for 20 minutes. Then apply to damp hair, leave for an hour and rinse with warm water. This mask helps to normalise sebum secretion in the scalp and keeps the hair looking fresh.

Nourishing Mask for All Hair Types

Mix some henna powder with 1 tbsp burdock oil and 1 tbsp olive oil. Then add 1 tbsp honey and an egg yolk. Stir well and add some warm water or herbal infusion to obtain a moderately thick paste. Apply to your hair, leave for 1 or 2 hours, rinse with warm water. This mask provides the hair with essential nutrients, helps to lock in moisture, and prevents dry and brittle hair.
