Natural Indian indigo powder by Chandi is a unique, 100% natural hair dye which is rich in biologically active substances. When mixed with other herbal dyes, indigo allows to achieve a wide range of shades. Besides, it makes the hair stronger and healthier, helps to eliminate dandruff, and prevents dry and itchy scalp.
Natural indigo dye is obtained from leaves of the plant Indigofera tinctoria, also known as true indigo. True indigo is a shrub that has been cultivated worldwide for many centuries. India became a primary supplier of indigo to Europe during the Greco-Roman air. No wonder that today Indian indigo is known all over the world.
Indigo dye has a distinctive blue colour, so pure indigo is never used as a hair dye. It is added to henna or layered on top of it to create brown to black colours. Indigo is blue, and henna is orange, so their combined effect is to create various shades of brown depending on proportions, as well as the original colour of the hair. A mix of henna and indigo is a great option for people who cannot dye their hair with chemical dyes due to individual sensitivity and allergies.
Indigo is valued for its bactericidal, nourishing and moisturising properties. When applied to hair, it repairs its structure, makes the hair smoother, and restores its natural, healthy shine. Biologically active substances contained in indigo have a positive effect on the epidermis. They eliminate bacteria that cause dandruff, as well as soothe irritated and flaky scalp.
As it’s already been mentioned above, indigo mixed with henna allows to create a wide range of shades depending on their proportions and the original hair colour. Here are some examples of the most popular proportions of henna and indigo:
- black: 2 parts indigo and 1 part henna;
- chestnut: 1 part indigo and 1 part henna;
- golden bronze: 1 part indigo and 2 parts henna;
- dark blond/light brown: 1 part indigo and 1 part henna, without leaving the dye on the hair for too long.
These are the basic colours, but you can create more shades by adding other herbs or experimenting with the time of dyeing.
Directions. Indigo is applied to clean, slightly damp hair. Mix indigo and henna with hot water (70-80°) in a non-metallic bowl and stir to form a moderately thick paste. For a better effect, let it sit for about 2 hours, then add more water and mix again, if necessary. Put on protective gloves, cover the upper part of your body with a cape or towel and apply some cream or petroleum jelly on your hairline. Using an applicator brush, apply the dye to hair from the roots upwards to the ends. Leave for 20 minutes to 2–3 hours depending on the desired result.
