Amla powder is derived from the edible fruits of the plant Phyllanthus emblica, also known as amla, emblic, or Indian gooseberry. It is widely used in traditional Indian medicine. Amla fruits are reputed to have high amounts of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which gives them strong antioxidant properties. In addition, they are rich in tannins, polyphenols, and other useful compounds.
When used as a hair care product, amla combats dandruff, reduces hair loss and stimulates its growth, prevents premature grey hair and split ends. If you use it regularly, amla will make your hair stronger and give it a healthy shine. Please note that amla powder can colour the hair, so if you have fair hair, you should use it with caution.
Amla is a great skincare product as well. Due to its strong antioxidant properties, it has a revitalising and rejuvenating effect on the skin. Amla powder prevents premature skin ageing and inflammation, improves skin texture and complexion, and helps to lock in moisture.
Amla powder can be used to make DIY face and hair packs, decoctions and infusions. It can be mixed with other Ayurvedic powders.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Apply skin toner and moisturiser.
To make an amla decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make an amla infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp amla powder, leave overnight. Strain before use. The infusion can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
You can use amla decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water.
