Karela is the Hindu name of the plant Momordica charantia, known by many various names, including balsam-pear, bitter apple, bitter gourd, bitter melon, bitter squash, etc. It originated in India and was eventually introduced into other parts of Asia, as well as Africa and the Caribbean. Its edible fruits are used in many cuisines, including Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, and others.
Karela has also been used in traditional medicine systems for a long time because it is rich in various nutrients, such as beta carotene (twice more than in broccoli), calcium (twice more than in spinach), potassium (twice more than in bananas), and other vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Due to its high nutrient content, karela powder is a great cosmetic ingredient.
When used as a skincare product, karela powder speeds up the healing of scratches, small cuts and other minor skin injuries, produces an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect, relieves the symptoms of psoriasis and eczema, prevents acne scars and skin irritation. In addition, it nourishes the skins, smooths out fine lines, reduces deeper wrinkles, and prevents age spots.
Karela powder is also effective as a hair care product. It strengthens hair roots, eliminates dandruff, and provides hair follicles with minerals and other nutrients.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a karela decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a karela infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp karela powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use karela decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Karela powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
