True indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) is a plant that grows in tropical and temperate Asia, as well as parts of Africa. Its leaves have long been used to produce blue dye. Indigo dye can be used to dye fabrics and as a hair dye. In the latter case, it is mixed with henna to achieve different shades of black and brown.
Indigo is never used on its own as a hair dye. Without henna, pure indigo stains the hair green or greenish blue. To dye your hair brown or black, you need to either mix henna powder with indigo powder, or layer one natural hair dye on top of the other. Indigo and henna can be mixed in different proportions to achieve different colours:
- 2 parts indigo and 1 part henna for black;
- 1 part indigo and 1 part henna for chestnut;
- 1 part indigo and 1 part henna with lesser exposure time for light brown/dark blonde;
- 1 part indigo and 2 parts henna for golden bronze.
The final result of dyeing your hair with indigo and henna will depend on the original colour of your hair and its structure, as well as the time of exposure. You can add other herbs that can stain hair (for example, amla) to the mixture to achieve an even wider range of shades.
In addition to dyeing your hair, indigo powder will take care of it. It has a moisturising, nourishing, and bactericidal effect. Indigo helps to repair damaged hair structure, makes the hair smoother, and restores its natural shine. It also combats dandruff, soothes an itchy and flaky scalp, and provides hair follicles with nutrients.
Directions. Indigo is applied to clean, slightly damp hair. Mix indigo and henna with hot water (70-80 °С) in a non-metal bowl and stir until moderately thiсk. For a better effect, let the mixture sit for a couple of hours, then add more water and stir again, if necessary. Put on protective gloves and cover the upper part of your body with a cape or a towel. Using an applicator brush, apply the dye to your hair. Leave for 20 minutes to 2–3 hours depending on the desired result.
