  Pomegranate (or anar in Hindi) has long been used in Ayurveda (an Indian system of folk medicine) as an ingredient in various remedies. Hindus use practically all parts of the plant (bark, peel, juice, roots) to treat a range of health conditions. Pomegranate is valued for its anti-inflammatory properties and high antioxidant content, which helps it to protect you from the harmful effects of free radicals.

  When used as a skincare product, pomegranate powder helps to stimulate the production of collagen, normalises microcirculation and sebum secretion, reduces the appearance of pores, makes the skin softer and smoother, and evens out skin tone. It also has skin lightening properties and thus reduces pigmentation.

  As a hair care product, pomegranate powder has a restorative effect on the hair that has been damaged by dyeing or bleaching. It also strengthens the hair from root to tip, stimulates its growth, restores the hair’s healthy gloss, and improves its protection from environmental stressors (sun, wind, dry or cold air).

  Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
  To make a pomegranate decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
  To make a pomegranate infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp pomegranate powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
  You can use pomegranate decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
  Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Pomegranate powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
