Bala, also known as heart-leaf sida, country mallow or flannel weed, is a perennial plant native to India. It has been naturalised across the world, and is even considered an invasive species in some regions. Country mallow is widely used in Brazilian and African folk medicine to treat various ailments, especially respiratory problems.
Bala is the plant’s name in Ayurveda, where it is primarily used as an anti-inflammatory and wound healing treatment. In addition, it has soothing, astringent, antioxidant and revitalising properties. Bala is a common ingredient in Ayurvedic face creams, toners, body lotions, ointments, hair conditioners and masks, and infused oils.
Bala powder can be used to take care of all skin types, but it is especially beneficial for dull and mature skin. It relieves inflammation, combats infections and acne breakouts, speeds up the healing of scratches and other minor skin injuries, produces a refreshing and rejuvenating effect, stimulates skin cell renewal, boosts the skin’s elasticity and firmness, and has a lifting effect.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a bala decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a bala infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp bala powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use bala decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Bala powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
