Indian sarsaparilla is the common name of the plant Hemidesmus indicus, which is also known as anantamul, anant bel, nannaari or nannetti. Indian sarsaparilla powder is also effective as a skincare product. It tightens enlarged pores, stimulates skin regeneration and renewal, helps to relieve the symptoms of some inflammatory skin conditions, and acts as a natural toner.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make an Indian sarsaparilla decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make an Indian sarsaparilla infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp Indian sarsaparilla powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use Indian sarsaparilla decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Indian sarsaparilla powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
