Black cumin powder is produced from the seeds of Nigella sativa (commonly known as black cumin or black caraway), a flowering plant native to South and West Asia. Black cumin seeds are primarily used as a spice in some cuisines, but they also have certain skin and hair benefits due to containing fatty acids (linoleic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid), essential oil, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and other biologically active substances.
Thanks to its high content of useful substances, black cumin powder is a great skincare ingredient. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used to relieve the symptoms of dermatitis, acne and even psoriasis. Black cumin stimulates skin cell regeneration and renewal, smooths out fine lines, boosts the skin’s elasticity and firmness, and improves microcirculation in the epidermis.
As a hair care ingredient, black cumin powder actively strengthens weak and damaged hair, provides it with nutrients, and helps to lock in moisture. In addition, it stimulates hair follicles and therefore improves hair growth, as well as makes the hair softer, smoother and shinier from root to tip.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Apply skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a black cumin decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a black cumin infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp black cumin powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use black cumin decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum.
