Lemon is widely used in Ayurveda (an Indian system of folk medicine) due to its ability to improve digestion, reduce vata (the dosha characterised by properties such as dry, cold, light, minute and movement) and balance other doshas. This is why lemon powder is a popular remedy and cosmetic ingredient in Ayurveda.
When used as a skincare product, lemon powder demonstrates rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to control oily shine, stimulates collagen synthesis, boosts the skin’s elasticity and firmness, relieves irritated and red skin. In addition, lemon powder is valued for its excellent skin lightening properties. Thanks to them, it reduces pigmentation, improves complexion, eliminates blackheads, and evens out skin tone.
As a hair care product, lemon powder provides deep cleansing, eliminates dandruff, normalises the production of sebum in the scalp, makes the hair silkier and glossier, improves its elasticity and flexibility. It also prevents brittle hair and split ends, as well as enhances hair volume.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a lemon decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a lemon infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp lemon powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use lemon decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Lemon powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
