Dhak is one of the many names of the plant Butea monosperma. Other names include flame-of-the-forest (due to its orange flame-like flowers), bastard teak, parrot tree, and others. The plant is native to the Indian Subcontinent; it grows in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Dhak is a popular remedy in Ayurveda due to its antioxidant and regenerative properties. When used as a skincare product, dhak powder helps to heal cuts and other minor skin injuries, relieves irritated skin and combats breakouts. It soothes the skin, reduces inflammation, normalises sebum secretion, and has a pleasant cooling effect, which makes it a great sunburn remedy.
As a hair care product, dhak powder nourishes and strengthens hair follicles, repairs damaged hair structure, stimulates hair growth. It also regulates the production of sebum in the scalp, combats dandruff and relieves itchy scalp. If used regularly, dhak powder will make your hair thicker and boost its volume.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a dhak decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a dhak infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp dhak powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use dhak decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Dhak powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
