Kapoor kachri (also spelled as kapur kachri) is the Hindu name of the plant Hedychium spicatum, commonly known as spiked ginger lily or perfume ginger. It is a small perennial shrub with large orange and white flowers native to China, Myanmar, Thailand, Ethiopia, and the Himalayas. Kapoor kachri is widely used in Ayurveda (where it is described as bitter, heating, light, pungent and strong), traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine, and Unani (Perso-Arabic traditional medicine practiced in some parts of Asia).
Kapoor kachri powder is made from the dried rhizomes (rootstalks) of the plant. When used as a skincare product, it is primarily valued for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Kapoor kachri powder inhibits the growth of acne-causing bacteria, prevents blackheads and pimples, speeds up the healing of minor skin injuries, prevents skin redness and irritation. In addition, it stimulates microcirculation in the epidermis, restores the skin’s natural firmness and elasticity, and has a refreshing effect.
As a hair care product, kapoor kachri powder is perfect for taking care of thin and weak hair. It strengthens hair structure from root to tip, prevents brittle hair and split ends, normalises the production of sebum in the scalp, and eliminates dandruff. It also improves blood circulation in the scalp, helping to provide hair follicles with nutrients and therefore reducing hair loss.
Directions. Mix 1 tsp powder with warm water to get a smooth paste. Apply to your skin or hair. Leave for 15–20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Follow up with skin toner and moisturiser.
To make a kapoor kachri decoction, put 1 tbsp powder into 500 ml water, bring to a boil, let simmer for 3 minutes. Let steep for 3 to 5 hours, strain before use.
To make a kapoor kachri infusion, pour 500 ml warm water over 1 tbsp kapoor kachri powder, leave overnight. Strain before use.
You can use kapoor kachri decoction or infusion to wash or wipe your face, or as a hair rinse.
Conduct a sensitivity test before use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store in the fridge for 2–3 days maximum. Kapoor kachri powder can be combined with other Ayurvedic powders for a stronger effect.
