Acne is a common skin problem that can affect any skin type, although it typically occurs during adolescence or in people with oily or combination skin, because acne breakouts occur when oil from the skin clogs pores. Fortunately, there is a wide range of acne treatments; for example, some people use Ayurvedic herbs to treat acne because of their antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine that originated in the Indian subcontinent. Ayurvedic treatments are typically based on herbal ingredients that may be derived from leaves, roots, stems, bark, fruits, or seeds. Plant-based Ayurvedic treatments have become quite popular around the world because they are affordable and (in some cases) indeed effective. For example, a lot of Ayurvedic herbs have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and skin balancing properties, which makes them great acne treatments.
Ayruvedic herbs are usually sold in a dried and powdered form, which makes them really easy to store and use. Died herbs preserve all the useful properties of their fresh counterparts and don’t need artificial preservatives. You can use Ayurvedic herbal powders to prepare DIY face masks, infusions and poultices, as well as add them to store-bought moisturisers and other cosmetic products.
Ayurvedic herbs with anti-acne properties include, but are not limited to, ashwagandha (winter cherry), manjistha (Indian madder), curry, dhak (flame-of-the-forest), arak (miswak), vetiver, moringa, bala (heart-leaf sida), neem, jambolan (Malabar plum), jujube (Chinese date), lemon, orange, mandarin, papaya, Damask rose, black cumin, and eucalyptus. All of them help to normalise the production of sebum in the skin, control oily complexion, produce an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects, and unclog pores.
You can choose one of these plants to treat acne or combine several of them to make your own DIY acne treatment. For example, you can use a combination of Ayruvedic herbs and some other natural ingredients to make ubtan, a home-made past made of a mix of dry natural ingredients and water or other liquid. A typical ubtan usually contains dried herbs, grains and legumes, clay, essential oils and some kind of liquid (water, herbal infusion, flower water or milk).
To make a DIY anti-acne ubtan, mix oatmeal, chickpea flour, pea meal, lentil flour or maize meal (about 50% of the total volume), neem, papaya and citrus powders (about 30% of the total volume), and additional ingredients, such as cosmetic clay (kaolin, bentonite, multani mitti), citrus, tea tree or eucalyptus essential oils, and some carrier oil (for example, sweet almond). Store the mixture in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. When you need to use it, mix some ubtan with liquid to get a paste, apply to your face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse off.
